Books to read if you're planning a vacation in "Eugene", sorted by average review score:

An American Bestiary
Published in Leather Bound by Lone Oak Press (23 September, 2000)
Author: Eugene J. McCarthy
Average review score:

Poorly done
When I saw the reviews for this book, I expected a funny, insightful view of Washington from one of its most creative insiders. The book has its moments of humor (sometimes it even makes you think) but it has several typos and McCarthy repeats paragraphs, almost word for word, several times. Most parts leave the reader disinterested and disappointed. Not money well spent.

The Amphibians and Reptiles of Louisiana
Published in Paperback by Louisiana State University Press (April, 1996)
Authors: Harold A. Dundee, Douglas A. Rossman, and Eugene C. Beckham
Average review score:

Louisiana needs an update
Good text and excellent range maps. Artwork is not very good. Taxonomy is out-dated, and common names are simply wrong. Authors continued to use the tongue-twisting academic (not common) names devised in the first half of the last century, instead of standardized common names in use nationwide since 1978. Publishers should have had the book reviewed by herpetologists of a younger generation. Only book available on Louisiana herps, so use it until a better one comes along.

Boeing in Peace and War
Published in Paperback by Taba Pub (June, 1990)
Author: Eugene E. Bauer
Average review score:

Boeing puff piece
This book is one of those internally generated corporate propaganda publications, in which each former corporate president or CEO is a towering, moralistic and unassailable figure. The book abounds with tales of eager employees working overtime without pay, as well as stories about shrewd corporate executives running circles around the competition. You will find a bit of general information about Boeing in this publication. But if your intent is to really learn more about this fascinating company and its history, there are far better books available on Amazon.com.

Electric Circuits and Machines
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Companies (January, 1975)
Author: Eugene C. Lister
Average review score:

7th edition
Im not sure which edition of this series by Lister is the best(probably the latest edition), but the 7th edition is useless. It is basically an dc/ac circuit text that is not even very good for that purpose. Basic introduction to dc motors, induction and synchronous motors. In the later chapters it has limited mathematics that relate to subjects on equipment. Just alot of very dry explanations. No electric circuits and machines here.

The Essential Brigham Young (Classics in Mormon Thought, No 3)
Published in Hardcover by Signature Books (June, 1992)
Authors: Brigham Young and Eugene E. Campbell
Average review score:

Interesting, but....
Brigham Young was one of the most proliffic speakers in LDS History. Fortunately, a number of people hand-copied some his his words and we have a feel for his thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately, the method of recording his thoughts was not up to today's standads of accuracy. Out of the thousands of purported sermons, this book attempts to take what might be deemed the "controverisal". If you are familiar with the body of Brigahm Young's thought, it is actually an interesting book. But if you aren't, the pieces selected will create a distortion. I would have probably rated it 3 stars, if they had picked some other title. It's not the essential Brigham Young, it's the obscure Brigham Young. Editor, All About Mormons Web Site.

The Highly Selective Dictionary of Golden Adjectives: For the Extraordinary Literate
Published in Hardcover by HarperResource (09 July, 2002)
Author: Eugene Ehrlich
Average review score:

Thanks for trying, but. . . .
"Golden adjectives" is a real stretch. In fact, some of these adjectives are so specialized or uninteresting that no English speaker would miss them if they were dropped from every existing dictionary. If you think "abortifacient" is a golden adjective, buy the book. Otherwise, you'd be better served by other resources.

The Last Man on the Moon
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (July, 2000)
Author: Eugene Cernan
Average review score:

This book on tape is poorly read
My chief complaint with this book on tape is that it is read poorly, probably by the author. Although Moon Shot by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton was panned in Amazon reviews, I very much enjoyed the book on tape version because a professional actor did the reading. Cernan's book on tape could have benefited immensely from an actor, too.

I found myself wondering how much co-author Don Davis helped Cernan with the descriptive language and thought it was a waste that Cernan (if he was the reader) couldn't do justice to the words.

As for content, Cernan relies too much on cliches, and I tend to agree with the reviewer who said Cernan writes too much about the internal politics of mission assignment.

However, his account of his first marriage made me wonder how much he wasn't telling. At first he seems to go out of his way to explain that other astronauts cheated on their wives, but he did not. His marriage was sound. Later in the book we hear how he spends too little time with his family. And at the end he tells us they got divorced four years after he left NASA. He, of course, got remarried and had two more children. Sounds like just another guy who traded in his faithful wife of the same age on a younger model. I ended up feeling sorry for Barbara.

Religious Dances in the Christian Church and in Popular Medicine.
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press Reprint (November, 1977)
Author: Eugene Louis Backman
Average review score:

Dances in a Somewhat Christain Church in Unpopular Medicine
The book, although interesting, doesn't show the true nature of the Christain Church, nor anyother form of religious denomination what so ever. Though the facts seem to be true, they seem hard to believe and the writting, though education is evident, seems to be written from a one sided view and not very reliable.

Serpent of Eden
Published in Paperback by Soho Press, Inc. (July, 1995)
Authors: Gene A. Wolf, Eugene A. Wolf, and James B. Van Treese
Average review score:

OK Plot, but Terrible Editing
It was a challenge to read this book in its entirety. The plot was compelling, reminiscent of a Clive Cussler novel. It moved fairly well and offered interesting twists along the way.

The editing, however, was simply awful. There are so many grammatical and punctuation errors that I could not believe this book was actually published in its current state. Example: many times the contraction "who's" is used, when the context clearly calls for "whose." Many questions are punctuated with a period instead of a question mark. There are myriad errors such as these.

Overall, it is an entertaining story for beach material.

Sheep and Goat Science (Animal Agriculture Series)
Published in Hardcover by Interstate Printers & Pub (April, 1986)
Authors: M. Eugene Ensminger and R.O. Parker
Average review score:

This is a sheep book with some goat info added
If you are considering this book only for the goat information, save your money and look for a different one. I purchased this book for the goat information and I found that 2/3 of the book is about sheep and the rest is old, obsolete information related to goats....especially meat goats. This book has not come up to speed related to the major changes that have happened over the last 6-7 years and some of their statistics are from 1994. The majority of the goat section covers dairy goats, angora and cashmere goats. The major part of the meat goat information concerns the spanish goats. Sixth edition must mean they have published the goat information six times...not updated it for the sixth time.
